Muslim Wedding Rituals

These traditions are very different from the Hindu religion as it is a contract, and hence the Urdu name Nikahnaama for the Muslim marriage. The agreement between the bride and the groom is called Ijab-O-Qubul. There are witnesses and a Mehr, which is the form of appreciation, the groom has to pay the bride. The contract of the event is recorded in black and white. The priest is called Kazi who oversees the proceedings of the occasion. The Baraat, Nikaah Ceremony, Sermons and Nikahnaama are the important traits of this nuptial moment.

One of the most important ways of tying the sacred knot as per this religion in India is Nikaah and the prayers. There are many other practices involved in the Nikaah ceremony of Muslims. The Maulvi is the religious representative who conducts the actual ceremony. The Walis are the parents of the bride and the groom and their part in the ceremony is important. The Maulvi recites lines from the holy Quran and then the Ijab-O-Qubul happens. In this belief, upon the consent of the bride and the wedding is formally over. The Mehr or the dowry is another important rite and is decided by mutual agreement and the Mehr has to be paid to the bride by the groom.

The special features of these celebrated customs are the Baraat and the Nikaah ceremony. Unlike other practices, marriage in the creed requires the consent of the bride for the event. After the D-Day, the elderly women of the household bless the groom. Besides that, watching each other from mirrors is also an interesting one in the religion.
