Gujarati Pre Wedding Customs

Gujarati weddings are known for their traditional rituals and customs. These rituals teach the newly married couple to how to live in married life? Thus, the couple has to perform all the customs from the bottom of their heart. The marriage rituals in Gujarati traditions begin well before the auspicious event. By performing all the pre-wedding customs, the bride and the groom along with their families start a new passage in their life. Nonetheless, this article will tell you the features of various Gujarat pre wedding day customs.

Sagaai

The first pre-wedding ritual in Gujarati wedding is the Sagaai or the engagement ceremony. It is conducted by both the families to announce the marriage schedule. During this ceremony, the family of the bride arrives with Matli or a steel container full of sweets and gifts for the groom and his relatives.

Mandap Mahurat

During the Mandap Mahurat ceremony, Ganesha Puja is conducted at the respective homes of both the bride and the groom. It is conducted to ensure good luck and prosperity to the soon-to-be-wed couple.

Griha Shanti

Like Mandap Mahurat, the Griha Shanti is also a puja which is conducted for the happy and peaceful wedding life for the bride and the groom. The priest conducts the Griha Shanti puja in according to the horoscopes of the bride and the groom.

Pithi

The ceremony of Pithi is conducted separately at the home of the bride and the groom. On this occasion, turmeric powder is applied on the body of the groom and the bride to produce a healthy glow for the big event.

Mehndi

Mehndi is the more traditional custom conducted well before the wedding. During the ceremony, henna or mehendi is applied on the bride hands and legs. Meanwhile, the female members and relatives perform folk dance and sing wedding songs.

Garba

No Gujarati event is completed without performing Garba. Both the families gather at the wedding venue and practice Raas, which is a part of Garba, by dancing with dadiya sticks in pairs.
