Hindu Wedding Day Customs
| Weddings are the platform on which the two individuals met together and indulge in new relationship. In India, the wedding is not just the way of celebrations and enjoyment rather it also consists of religious significance. The rituals and traditions are so sacred and meaningful, which are performed by the groom and the bride. Like all the Indian weddings, Hindu marriages are also comprised of traditional rituals and customs that are further divided into pre-wedding, wedding day and post-wedding ceremonies. This article will focus on the wedding day customs performed in the Hindu marriages. Welcoming the Groom
On the day of wedding, the groom along with the procession arrives at the bride's home. At the entrance, the bride's parents welcome the groom and his parents to perform the ceremony of 'Milni'. Thereafter, the brother of the bride takes the groom inside the venue. Jaimala
During the ceremony of Jaimala, the bride and the groom arrive at the stage and perform the custom of Jaimala. In this ritual, the garlands are given to the couple which they exchange to kick off the auspicious event of the wedding. Meanwhile, the relatives and family members chant everywhere the best wishes to the couple. Saat Phere
After performing the ceremony of Jaimala, the couple is taken towards the mandap where they perform the ritual of saat phere. The bride and the groom take seven rounds of sacred fire and chants religious hymns to accept each other's responsibility. Sindoor Ceremony
In the Sindoor ceremony, the groom applies sindoor or vermillion on the bride's hair parts with a ring or his fingers. This ceremony is meant a lot for the bride because it is the identity of being a married woman. Soon after, the family members and the relatives wish the couple to enter in the married life. Mangalsutra
Another major identity of a married woman is the mangalsutra. At the mandap, the groom ties the mangalsutra on to the neck of the bride. Kanyadaan
One of the most important Hindu wedding rituals is Kanyadaan. During this ritual, the father of the bride gives her hand onto the hand of the groom, which means he has transformed all his daughter's responsibilities to the groom. |
